Dr. Deidre Franklin will join Oliver Scholars as our new Chief Program and Equity Officer in early March. Dr. Franklin will leverage her extensive knowledge in the diversity and equity educational space to help establish Oliver as a leader in helping our school partners achieve their DEI goals while ensuring that we maintain a holistic approach to student support and leadership development throughout the Oliver pipeline. Dr. Franklin has served as VP of Programs at the YWCA of the City of New York, and Managing Director of Youth Development and Counseling at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund, where she developed culturally responsive curricula to support students along their college trajectory, co-designed an agency-wide Parent Conference, and trained staff and educators in asset-based student engagement practices. She is most noted for her efforts to engage young people via participatory action research, and trainings she’s designed that have included Unpacking racism and creating equity in a social change organization, and Culturally responsive strategies for parent engagement in out-of-school time programs. A native New Yorker and graduate of Howard University, Dr. Franklin has a Master’s Degree in Education from Harvard University and received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College Columbia University. Her children attend The Dalton and Elizabeth Irwin Schools in New York City.
Mark Hall will join the team as our Director of Admissions and Placement. Mark is driven by the belief that all children deserve access to a high-quality and culturally responsive education regardless of the color of their skin, their socioeconomic status or their zip code. After receiving his degree in English and Spanish from Amherst College, Mark taught English and Spanish at Westminster School in Connecticut and Thayer Academy in Massachusetts, where he also coached varsity basketball and track. After leaving the classroom, Mark served as dean of students and then director of the PREP 9 program at Prep for Prep for a decade. Mark joins Oliver Scholars from Ascend Public Charter Schools where he was the Director of the Teaching Fellows Program, where he launched a program to recruit and train the next generation of urban educators. Mark resides in Bedford- Stuyvesant with his wife Samantha and is the proud father of Stokely, three, and Evers six months. He will join Oliver effective March 11, 2019.
And, in February we welcomed Randy Frazer as our new Scholar Guidance Dean. Randy has significant experience in college success program development, in addition to his work to support public school students in out-of-school time programs. As the former Manager of College Programs at Harlem Educational Activities Fund, Randy developed a college readiness tracking rubric which was used annually to assess students’ progress toward college admissions. He also coordinated financial aid and admissions sessions with students and families, and managed a college application mentoring initiative. Randy graduated from Wheaton College, where he was a Posse Scholar. He recently completed his Master’s Degree in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology at SUNY Albany.
